Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a powerful, evidenced based approach to behavior change that has proven helpful for practitioners across many professional fields. MI is a person-centered, goal-oriented method of communication that elicits and strengthens intrinsic motivation for positive change. Through MI, staff can help the persons they serve increase importance, confidence and readiness for change. This workshop will provide a general introduction to the philosophy, science, and techniques of motivational interviewing, with a particular focus on successful implementation strategies for organizations.

Presenter: Jason Anderson: Upon his discharge from the United States Army, Jason obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice (Minor in Psychology) at Moorhead State University. While in college, he worked part-time for the Cass County (Fargo, ND) Sheriff’s Department as a Detention Officer. Following college, he worked with court-ordered juveniles as an Adventure Counselor at St. Croix Boy’s Camp in Sandstone, MN. Jason began his career with the MN Dept. of Corrections in 1998 as an adult felony agent. In that capacity, he became a trainer of various EBP tools and practices. In October, 2007, he assumed the position of Evidence Based Practices Project Manager for the Dept. of Corrections. He is the Chair of Minnesota’s Offender Risk Assessment Network (ORAN), a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), serves as a liaison and resource to several corrections departments and conducts countless trainings across Minnesota. Jason has also served as a Regional Training Coordinator for the National Institute of Corrections since 2009.
